Volvo will equip its new XC electric SUV 90, whose disclosure is scheduled for next year, with a unique security system of its kind due to two new particularly novel features: a self-driving supercomputer developed by NVIDIA Drive Orin and a built-in LiDAR system, developed by Luminar. Volvo’s main goal with these new additions to its safety system is to improve safety efficiency to prevent accidents, while setting a milestone in the automotive industry by developing true autonomous driving systems. Also, the company seeks to reaffirm its priority of preventing unfortunate events to directly influence the high costs of insurance, which would end up being more affordable as the chances of traffic accidents decrease.

This new system will also use over-the-air updates (OTA) to become more complex and more effective, just as it will the new Porsche infotainment system, which can receive instructions in natural language and can also learn, becoming increasingly intelligent to assist the driver .

According to Håkan Samuelsson, CEO of the company: “Volvo Cars is and always has been a leader in safety. You will now define the next level of car safety By having this hardware as standard, we can continually improve over-the-air safety features and introduce advanced autonomous driving systems, reinforcing our leadership in safety. ”

Basically, LiDAR technology (“Light Detection and Rangin”, also known as “Laser Imaging Detection and Ranging”) improves the detection of pedestrians and objects by calculating the exact distance at which these are found with great precision. This is possible thanks to the use of lasers that would be fired from the vehicle to create a three-dimensional image of its surroundings. LiDAR technology is widely used in other disciplines: from scanning surfaces and monuments in archeology to forensic science, where it is used, among other things, to analyze crime scenes. For its part, the NVIDIA supercomputer will make cars get smarter over time and therefore much more personal and safer.

In addition to implementing these new features, Volvo will also include other enhancements to the XC’s safety system 90 related to the address and braking , making it capable of driving autonomously without risk of collision. The brand has also announced that it will give more details about its technological advances tomorrow during Volvo Cars Tech Moment , a virtual event broadcast live through its official channels.
