This Saturday Letitia James, the attorney general of New York, announced that Johnson & Johnson agreed to end the manufacturing and sale of opioids nationwide and reached a settlement of $ 230 millions of dollars that will be paid to the state of New York .
As part of the agreement, the pharmacist will allocate payments for nine years, however , could pay an additional $ 30 million dollars if new state legislation creates a new opioid settlement fund .
The main argument of the lawsuits indicate that companies have over-prescribed drugs causing consumers to become addicted and abuse other illegal forms of opioids , however the companies have defended themselves by saying that they have only distributed the necessary amount to help people with medical problems.
In a statement released this Saturday, the New York attorney general clarifies that: “the opioid epidemic has wreaked havoc in countless communities the state of New York and the rest of the country, leaving millions of people still addicted to dangerous and deadly opioids. ”
