An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 shook the city of Lima and the central coast of Peru on Tuesday night .
The Geophysical Institute of Peru reported that the earthquake occurred at 16: 54 local time (02: 54 GMT) and its epicenter was located in Pacific waters, at 33 kilometers from the coastal city of Mala, south of the Peruvian capital .
The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude of 5.8 with an intensity of 7 / 10 that generates
a “very strong” jolt .
The earthquake did not generate any tsunami alert on the Peruvian coast, according to the Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation of the Navy of the Peru.
There were also no reports of victims or significant damage to infrastructure , according to the first report of the National Emergency Operations Center.
Twitter users reported that there was some minor damage at the Jorge Chávez International Airport.

“I want to invoke you to remain calm. We have already deployed personnel in the areas where landslides have occurred, taking all pertinent measures to safeguard the safety of citizens, ”the mayor of Lima, Jorge Muñoz, said in a tweet.
In Lima and other nearby towns it was perceived as “very strong” .
The mayor of the city of Mala, Sonia Ramos , reported Tuesday night that the earthquake, which had its epicenter in that town, caused damage to several homes and weakened retaining walls in the area.
“We are going to need all the support to provide peace of mind to the population of Mala,” he told the local channel ATV.

“It was one of the strongest earthquakes that Lima has felt in recent years,” said Hernando Tavera, director of the Geophysical Institute of Peru, according to a report by the AFP agency.
“It was an earthquake of significant magnitude, we are expecting aftershocks,” he added.

The newspaper The Trade spread photographs of Lima residents who left their homes to wait in a safe place on the street moments later of the earthquake. In the Costa Verde area, rocks fell on the roads.
Peru is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire in which approximately the 550% of world seismic activity.
