Keeping the car headlights in good condition is a matter of first necessity to guarantee our visual field as drivers, especially at night or in adverse weather conditions . Although they always appear shiny, they tend to become opaque over time because they are made of polycarbonate, a really resistant type of plastic that tends to react to constant exposure to environmental conditions, especially the sun’s rays. This opacity is which will end up affecting its beam of light, making it increasingly dim. However, there is a procedure that could bring them back to life and that only requires the use of a product that we all have at home: toothpaste.

For years, many people have relied on toothpaste to solve this problem without risking great expense. It is a temporary solution, but very useful to extend the life of the headlights as much as possible . The procedure is really simple:

1. Cover the surfaces around the headlight to avoid wear on the paint.

2. Take a tube of toothpaste and apply a generous amount to the surface of the lighthouse.

3. With the help of a sponge, cover the entire headlight.

4. Take a cloth, moisten it and rub the entire surface vigorously for a few minutes.

5. Rinse the entire surface with plenty of water and make sure not to leave any residue.

6. Dry the surface of the headlight with a cloth.

7. Proceed to repeat all the steps in the other lighthouse.

8. When finished, turn on the lights to notice the change.

This technique is really efficient and tends to leave amazing results at a glance the lights may not need to be turned on. Toothpaste contains microcrystals that are abrasive and rub against the surface of the headlights to remove the deteriorated layer that has also accumulated dirt. That is why it will not be strange to see small remains or notice how the toothpaste turns yellowish.

Some people recommend removing toothpaste with a glass cleaner for best results, including replacing the sponge and cloths with absorbent paper . Also apply some kind of soft spray varnish to protect the headlight surface evenly. This will prevent UV rays from directly hitting the polycarbonate, making the deterioration process much slower.
