Avalanche of heat records in California and authorities extend Flex Alert


The alert of the electricity grid in California seeks to use as little energy as possible due to the powerful heat wave that this Thursday produced 123 degrees in Palm Springs and 109 in Sacramento

The California authorities announced that the electric power alert will continue on Friday 18 of June due to the extreme heat wave that this week is “roasting” the state.

The call “Flex Alert” to reduce energy use announced by California ISO will be between 6 pm and 9 pm Friday statewide. A similar alert was in effect this Thursday between 5 pm and 10 pm.

By At the moment there are no plans to order rotating power outages as occurred in the summer of 1999, but California ISO indicated that both weather conditions and power grid conditions will continue to be monitored to possible emergency measures.

The California Electric Power Operating Corporation is requesting back to the public to set the thermostats in their homes at a temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit or more if possible, avoid using appliances , especially the big ones such as washers and dryers, and obviously turn off the unnecessary lights.

This heat wave has brought to California temperatures in June that normally occur in August and September and in some cases have been implemented numerous heat records .

The authorities ask the public to take proper care of people vulnerable to heat and also pets.

This Thursday were registered 111 degrees Fahrenheit in Lancaster, 109 in Palmdale and 109 in Paso Robles , all of them records for a 17 of June.

In Palm Springs the thermometer reached the 123 degrees, a temperature that ties the historical record for any date in that city.

In Northern California many records also fall for a 17 June, including 109 degrees in Sacramento and 106 in Stockton. In Red Bluff there was 111.

Extreme temperatures and drought raise the risk of more fires in the western states of the country.
