WASHINGTON – The President Joe Biden will meet on Tuesday at the White House with the African-American’s family George Floyd , on the occasion of the first anniversary of his murder at the hands of a white policeman in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The White House has not yet confirmed the president’s official agenda for next week, but the country’s main media reported this Saturday of the scheduled meeting of Biden with the relatives of Floyd .
The anniversary coincides with the negotiations in Congress to promote a police reform .
Floyd died on 25 May 2020 after the then police Derek Chauvin will press the neck with one knee of the African American, who repeated several times that he could not breathe.
Floyd’s passing triggered the largest wave of protests and race riots in the US since the late 1960s following the murder of Martin Luther King.
Mid-April Chauvin was found guilty of murder by a jury and now awaits sentence, that will be read next 16 June in a Minneapolis court.
In parallel, Democratic and Republican Party lawmakers try to reach an agreement on police reform to end abuses, negotiations that for the moment seem stalled.
In question is a bill, dubbed the “George Floyd Police Justice Act”, drawn up by members of the Black Caucus of Congress, that aims to end the use of of strangulation techniques, “legal immunity” for officers and the militarization of police departments.
The main point of disagreement between progressives and conservatives is that shields government officials such as police officers from potential lawsuits.
Biden has expressed his support for this draft law and has request to Congress to reach an agreement for the 25 May, although it is difficult to reach an agreement for this date.
On Friday, the White House Press Secretary, Jen Psaki, said the government was in contact with lawmakers working to reach that agreement.
