Former US President Donald Trump urged Republican lawmakers to oppose the creation of a commission to investigate the assault on the Capitol on January 6.
Trump crossed out the commission of “Democratic trap” in a statement released this Tuesday night, hours before the Lower House votes on its creation this Wednesday.
“ Republicans must get much tougher and smarter, and stop being used by the radical left. Hopefully Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy are listening! ”Trump said, alluding to party leaders in the Senate and Lower House.
The former president said that The commission, whose bases have been negotiated by Republican Congressman John Katko, is “more partisan injustice” and affirmed that the debate within the ranks of his party “must end immediately.”
Katko was one of the 10 Republican congressmen who supported the “ impeachment “ against Trump in the wake of the assault on Congress.
McCarthy and the Republican leadership announced on Tuesday their opposition to the creation of the independent commission of inquiry, but it is expected that there are several conservative congressmen who support it.
The creation of the commission is guaranteed the approval of the Lower House , where the Democrats have a majority, but in the Senate requires the support of at least 10 Republican legislators to pass.
At the moment it is not clear if a sufficient number of senators from the party of Donald Trump will give their support to the commission, which would consist of an even number of members appointed by Republicans and Democrats.
The argument that many Republicans cling to oppose the commission is that should also include political violence that occurred during the mostly peaceful racial protests last summer in the United States.
