Events calendar: distance fun

The Los Angeles Music Center, in collaboration with Dance Magazine, presents Inside Look: M isty Copeland and Dada Masilo — changing narratives in dance, an in-depth conversation at the that Copeland – first dancer of the American Ballet Theater – and Masilo – South African dancer and choreographer, share personal anecdotes of two powerful women of color who have navigated and conquered the complicated world of dance.

In this virtual conversation the two dancers will also talk about how they have broken barriers and fought against misconceptions about what a dancer’s body should be like, as well as the stories of the repertoires. This will be a Dance Magazine exclusive broadcast and will last 30 minutes. Those interested can register in advance at dancemagazine.com. This week the Latin Alternative Music Conference is held virtually, an event dedicated to promoting alternative music in Spanish. In the six days that it lasts – it ends on Friday -, it presents the highlights of Latin music as well as the sounds of artists and groups that begin and that interpret genres such as rock, hip hop and electronic.

In this year’s edition there will be panels, workshops and musical presentations. Today, for example, in the panel The creative process in times of pandemic, artists and composers such as Eduardo Cabra, Alizzz, Áureo Baqueiro, Guaynaa and Carla Morrison converse. In the musical part, Dawer X Damper, Cande and Paulo, Pahua, La Dame Blanche, Hendrix, Sebastián Otero and Fidel Nadal perform. On Friday, one of the most attractive panels of the day are Fito Páez, Pepe Aguilar, Ximena Sariñana and Rozalén, who participate in the conversation entitled Mental Health for the Creative Community. The pop opera quartet, Il Divo, will offer a live show this weekend to celebrate Mother’s Day. Urs Buhler (from Switzerland), Sébastien Izambard (from France), Carlos Marín (German raised in Spain) and David Miller (from the United States) will perform in a concert that can be seen all over the world.

The group will perform some of their best-known hits, as well as classic songs and songs from “Timeless”, their most recent album, which was Recorded in Los Angeles. This album includes ten love songs, among them “Smile”, based on an instrumental piece where “Modern Times” was used, a classic film by Charles Chaplin from . This album also features all-time songs like Elvis Presley’s “Love Me Tender”; “Hello,” Adele’s cover of “Hello,” “All of Me,” by John Legend, and “Angels,” by Robbie Williams. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and to celebrate it, the Department of Health of the Los Angeles County presents We Rise, an initiative that promotes wellness and healing through art, connection, community engagement, and creative expression.

This time, We Rise includes Art Rise, a series of twenty art installations, community pop-up events, more than 50 local activities in neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles County and a digital experience . There will also be an offer of original programs that can be seen virtually. All facilities and activities are designed to be viewed from a distance, individually or in small groups. On Friday, as part of the program, artist Sandra de la Loza, Mapache City Projects and LA Routed co-founder Johanna Iraheta will host an immersive body experience connecting the diverse ecosystems of Earvin Magic Johnson Park and habitats with personal and collective well-being. The experience will be around the recently remodeled lake. There will be a yoga, dance, meditation and DJ music class. We Rise ends on 31 May and takes place in various locations in the county. Also as part of We Rise, but at the Grand Park in Los Angeles, the Grand Park’s Celebration Spectrum, which in collaboration with dublab, artist Tanya Aguiñiga and curator Mark “Frosty” McNeill, will mount an audiovisual exhibition showing the work of more of 34 local artists, with a fusion of art, music and cultural identity experiences.

With the art installations that take place in this urban oasis of 12 acreage, as well as digital programming accessible via the park’s website, the collaboration reflects the various ways in which l So diverse communities in Los Angeles County celebrate, connect, find and express their joy. Grand Park’s Celebration Spectrum will transform this outdoor venue into a deconstructed party, which becomes a progression of art audience and sound installations representing the arc of an epic party. This is one of the 21 experiences in downtown Los Angeles created in collaboration with museums, cultural institutions and artists to use the power of art for collective well-being. Marco Antonio Solís El Buki, who this year celebrates 45 years as an artist, he will offer the online concert Bohemia en pandemic, which coincides with the release of the single “ You could see it coming ”.
