TO 26 years of death of Selena Quintanilla , the singer continues to have thousands of fans who appreciate her music. That is why we remember the story behind one of her greatest hits: “Amor Prohibido.”

The singer originally from Texas had only 24 years when was murdered in Corpus Cristi at the hands of who she considered her friend and was the leader of her fan club, Yolanda Saldívar . The young woman was shaping a solid musical career that was on the rise until her dream ended.

And one of her greatest hits was undoubtedly the song “Forbidden Love”, Released at 1994 (one year before his murder). The song was ranked number 1 on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart when it was released, in addition to being heard all over the American continent and even reaching countries like Norway.

The lyrics, as the title says, talks about an “impossible love”, which was immediately related to the marriage that the singer had with Chris Pérez , the Los Dinos guitarist whom the queen of tex-mex ended up secretly marrying.

Let’s remember that Selena’s father did not agree with the romance between her and Chris and when he found out about their romance he took the guitarist out of the band and even went so far as to tell him that he was “a cancer for the family.” The singer’s series released on Netflix last year took up this episode of his life.

However, the song does not talk about them two. The author of the song -and brother of the singer- AB Quintanilla , explained in an interview that the song’s story refers to her grandmother, who when she was young worked as a domestic worker in a house of a wealthy family and during this time fell in love with one of the children.

So this topic talks about a “romance” that could not be due to economic differences that existed between them.

Some fans of the singer admit that although AB was not talking about her sister, the “forbidden love” she had could well have been inspired by her.
