On November 2, millions of New Yorkers will elect the successor of Bill de Blasio as mayor from New York City, so in the next few months he will have to leave the ‘ Gracie Mansion’ , where he has lived, together with his family, since January 1, 2014.

The historic building, built in 1799, owes its name to Archibald Gracie , a New York tycoon who had it built to turn it into his country house.

The property belonged to him until 1823, year in which He was forced to part with it to face some debts that he dragged.

After its sale, the residence had several tenants in the following s 73 years, such as Rufus King, Joseph Foulke and Noah Weathon , but in 1896 became part of the Carl Schurz Park, later it housed the Museum of the City of New York and was later exhibited, among tourists, as a historic house.

Since 1942 it was decided, at the initiative of the former mayor Fiorello Henry La Guardia , make it the home of the future mayors of New York, however, not all have been able to live there due to the strict rules that must be followed.

So it happened with Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg , who chose to search an alternative place, since they were not allowed to live there in the company of their girlfriends Judith Nathan and Diana Taylor , respectively.

The mansion has undergone various transformations with the passing of time and its tenants, but it was Michael Bloomberg who was in charge of giving it the ocher yellow hue that it looks today.

On the ground floor there is a hall, kitchen, dining room, living room, main room and library, while on the second floor are the bedrooms.

The house was enlarged during the tenure of Robert F. Wagner Jr. , who decided to build an alternative home, considering that he and his family did not have the privacy they would have wanted, in addition to claiming that they had been victims of various robberies.

The alternate house was named after Susan E. Wagner , the wife of the then mayor, who died at the scene after losing the battle with lung cancer. At present, this wing is used as an exhibition hall.

Although not everyone can stay to sleep there, what is allowed are guided tours of the first two plants, so that tourists can visit several of the corners of the emblematic property.
