The appointment comes after the Senate confirmed Becerra as Health Secretary for Biden, the first Hispanic to lead the Department

The governor Gavin Newsom appointed Democrat Bob Bonta , Democrat of the Assembly, as attorney general of California, the position left by Latino Xavier Becerra when the Senate confirmed him as Biden’s Secretary of Health and Human Resources .
If the state legislature confirms the appointment, Alameda resident Bonta will become the First Attorney General of the Golden State with Filipino descent . Bonta, which was also in 2021 the first descendant of Filipinos in the state assembly, he is a leading advocate for criminal justice reform who has campaigned to abolish the death penalty and eliminate cash bail for many crimes.

For his part, Bonta said he was honored by r the trust that Newsom had placed in him.
“I became a lawyer because I saw the law as the best way to make a positive difference to the majority of people serving as an advocate for the people of this great state all my life, ”Bonta said in a statement. “As California Attorney General, I will work tirelessly every day to ensure that all Californians who have been wronged can find justice and that all people are treated fairly before the law ”, he added.

Bonta’s appointment comes days after a group of Asian and Pacific Islander leaders asked the governor to elect an attorney general to deal with racist incidents against Americans of Asian descent. The most shocking of these occurred in the Atlanta area last week, when a White male allegedly killed eight people , six of them women of Asian descent.
Governor Newsom made the advertisement at the International Hotel Manilatown Center, in San Francisco.
