The Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken, condemned from Seoul the eight person shooting murders in Atlanta, which four were of Korean origin.
“ I want to offer my deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who have died. our fellow Americans and Korean Americans to feel safe, “Blinken said during a meeting with his South Korean counterpart, Chung Eui-yong, in statements collected by the Yonhap agency.
The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed today that four (all women) of the victims – including seven women and one man – of the shootings are of Korean origin and that the consulate in Atlanta is still confirming if any of them had South Korean nationality.
The victims lost their lives in three attacks perpetrated on two rooms of Asian massages located around the southern American city of Atlanta.
The alleged perpetrator of the three attacks and murders is a man of 21 years identified as Robert Aaron Long.
Although the reasons have not yet been released, it is believed that there may have been a racial motivation in the murders given that six of the victims are of Asian origin.
Violence against the Asian community in the US has grown enormously in the last year (for example a 1, 900 % in the city of New York, according to the city police department) in possible connection with the COVID pandemic – , whose first cases were reported in the Chinese city of Wuhan, and the growing Washington-Beijing polarization.
