The Government of the President Joe Biden , started this Wednesday at process in Brownsville (Texas) the asylum applications of migrants who are already in the Matamoros Mexican camp, across the Rio Grande (or Rio Grande as it is known in northern Mexico).
Hundreds of migrants, mostly Central Americans, have lived for months in that camp as a consequence of the policy of former President Donald Trump under which foreigners who arrived at the US border in search of asylum had to wait in Mexico for the processing of their applications.
Within the framework of this policy, called Protocol Protection of Migrants (MPP) , known as “Stay in Mexico”, near 70, 02 asylum seekers were returned to Mexico from 2019 once they reached the U.S. border
Religious groups, human rights, and The migrants’ lawyers have since denounced overcrowding, poor sanitation and exposure to criminals in the camps where the Migrants await their opportunity for a hearing with the US immigration authorities
The start of the proceedings in Brownsville occurs days after Last Friday, the US began allowing MPP asylum seekers to enter the US through the San Ysidro international crossing in Southern California.
Immigration authorities in Brownsville planned to begin accepting asylum seekers the pa s Saturday, while El Paso, also in Texas, is expected to start next Friday.
A statement from Department of Homeland Security (DHS) noted that the region, in the state of Tamaulipas, has had extreme weather conditions in weeks recently when two winter storms left millions of people in Texas without power.
“Attention to humanitarian needs in Matamoros has become a priority,” added the statement. “ We will work with the government of Mexico and organizations in the field to facilitate the procedures of current camp residents who qualify for this program. ”
DHS warned that “the people who now arrive at the Matamoros camp will not gain entry to the United States under this limited management.”
“The government, everyone levels, it has been clear: people should not believe smugglers and others who claim that the border is open now, “the statement added. “The (US) government will enforce existing immigration laws.”
Also, DHS noted that migrants “should not approach the border, including designated ports of entry, unless and until they are approved and receive appointment information (for hearings) through the virtual registration process. ”
“The physical presence in a port of entry is not the way to obtain access to this gradual management to gradually close the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP) program,” he added.
As in San Ysidro, have priority those with an obvious situation vulnerability and all those allowed to enter the United States must complete security controls and give negative in covid tests – 19.
