“The roof of the kitchen literally collapsed,” reported one of those affected who was left homeless

Two emergencies reported by FDNY in recent hours left an elderly woman dead on the Upper West Side and six children and three adults injured after a residential explosion in the Bronx.
At around 8 p.m. Wednesday, a fire in an apartment inside Douglass Houses at Columbus Avenue and 101 st St killed a woman of 72 years. His identity was not revealed, pending family notification.
According to the police, the fire was contained in that third-floor house, he said Pix 11. The origin of the fire was determined “accidental”.
The second major emergency was reported yesterday after a gas explosion in The Bronx. Nine people – six children and three adults – were injured.

There was a gas explosion in the second floor of the building, which blew out most of the windows and doors , but authorities said the cause is unknown.
“My room was turned upside down in a second,” said resident Adriel Sambolin. “There are literally holes in the walls. The kitchen ceiling literally came down. ”
Two of the children were in critically ill with life-threatening injuries, authorities said. Two people suffered serious injuries, but were reported in stable condition. The other injured sustained minor damage.
All residents left the building: a three-story multi-family house with several apartments. A Con Edison spokesperson said a team drove to the scene and the gas was shut off in the area.
The City’s Department of Buildings (DOB) will conduct an inspection of the structural stability of the facilities. The Red Cross is providing temporary shelter and emergency financial assistance for at least two of the affected families.
