The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and Martin Luther King III, son of the activist for the civil rights of the African Americans in the United States, commemorated this Sunday the 190 years of death of the Mexican and Afro-descendant pro-independence hero Vicente Guerrero.
The event was the first of The 15 programmed by the Government of Mexico in 2021 to commemorate the 190 years of independence (1821) , the 500 of the conquest of Hernán Cortés (1521) and the 700 of the founding of Tenochtitlan (1321), current Mexico City.
López Obrador and Luther King III paid tribute to the insurgent leader in to a monu ment erected in Culiápam , a town in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca where Guerrero was shot in 1831, a year after being overthrown as president of Mexico.
“ The man who was assassinated, shot here in Culiapám, the intrepid and conscientious Vicente Guerrero, led a truly popular movement against the oligarchy and against the privileged classes “, recalled López Obrador, at the event, which was also attended by his wife, Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller, several members of the Government and the governors of Oaxaca and Guerrero.

The next event will take place on 24 December, when will be fulfilled 200 years of the promulgation of the Iguala Plan, which declared independence from Spain, a commemoration that will be attended by the President of Argentina, Alberto Fernández.
López Obrador recalled that several events will be held to offer on behalf of the Mexican State “the most sincere apologies” to indigenous communities for “the dispossession of their lands and the racism they have suffered since the Spanish invasion. ”
