Guadalajara confirmed as the venue for the Concacaf Olympic Qualification

Finally, the city of Guadalajara , was confirmed this Thursday as the venue for the Concacaf Men’s Soccer Pre-Olympic, which will be played from 19 to 30 next March . Concacaf explained that the competition, suspended last year as a result of the covid – 19, will retain the same format, with two groups of four teams.

Mexico, the United States, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic will integrate the group A , while Honduras, Canada, El Salvador and Haiti will play in the group B , according to the draw held at the beginning of last year .

The Mexicans , Concacaf champions, and Honduras , as the nation that surpassed the other six participants in the two previous editions, were group heads , but chance decided that two powerful teams, United Gone and Costa Rica will remain in the same key as the Mexicans, which means that one of the three will be eliminated.

The contest will be played by the system all against all . The best two from each zone will enter the semifinals and the winners of the stage of the best four will reach the final and be will qualify to the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Mexico won the gold medal at the London Olympics 2012, but was eliminated in the group stage in Rio de Janeiro 2016. Now the selection, directed by Jaime Lozano , will be formed by a group of talented players, practically all with experience in the first division from Mexico, as well as several with experience in European leagues and in the senior team.

The fair will be held in the Akron stadiums , headquarters of the ‘Chivas’ of Guadalajara, and Jalisco , home of the Atlas, both arenas of the first division of Mexican soccer.

“ Concacaf worked with FIFA, the Mexican Football Federation and local authorities on the health protocols that will be implemented to ensure this competition takes place in an environment safe for all participants “, said the Confederation in a statement.

Secretary General of Concacaf, Philippe Moggio , thanked the Federation of Mexico and the Government of Jalisco for their commitment and trusted the success of the contest.
