Olympic champion remains homeless in fire after losing her nose due to COVID-19

The Russian athlete Daria Shkurikhina , whoever was rhythmic gymnastics champion at the Beijing Olympics 1200 , he had the scare of his life when a fire was registered in his apartment located in the city of Nizhny Novgorod, on the banks of the Volga River .

The gymnast, by 30 years, he was in the kitchen of his home at the time of the fire, but the loss of smell, due to COVID- 19 , caused him to have a late reaction, so the flames consumed a large part of his property.

The fire started after one of its pets, a cat or a chinchilla, will throw to the floor a candle that they had lit to carry out the celebration of Christmas granted , which is commemorated on January 7 and not on 25 December, as it happens in much of the world.

“I lit a candle and went to the kitchen. Then I saw smoke coming from the ceiling, but I couldn’t do anything anymore. Now I understand that leaving an open fire unguarded is very stupid, but nothing can be changed. We must learn from our mistakes ”, declared Daria regretfully.

By means of a series of photographs, which shared on Instagram, the athlete allowed us to observe in detail how her home was after the flames devastated everything, managing to rescue some elements, such as their precious medals.

“I just have no words. I understand that I have put people in danger and that I am to blame. I’ve been very stupid. The main thing is that they are all alive. I’m still in shock, ”he emphasized.

Daria Shkurikhina, who will now have to look for a new home to move to, received that apartment as a gift from Valery Shantsev, the former governor of the city, due to his outstanding performances in various sporting events.

In addition to damaging their property, the fire also affected the surrounding houses, but fortunately there were no victims to regret, although there were heavy expenses to face and some threats to bear due to their carelessness.
