To react to the chaos that shook the Capitol in Washington, Emmanuel Macron chose no less than a solemn speech delivered behind a lectern at the Elysee. In a video posted on social media around 3 a.m. on Thursday, the president said, “We will not give in to the violence of a few who want to question” the democracy.

“When, in one of the oldest democracies in the world, supporters of an incumbent president question, by means of arms, the legitimate results of an election, it is a universal idea – that of a man, a voice – which is beaten in br èche, ”added the French president. “What happened today in
Washington is definitely not American, ”he said, this time in English.
“Freedom above all”
“It is our choice, for several centuries, to put human dignity, peace, respect for others, the recognition of freedom above all, which is today ‘Hui threatened in our democracies’, he added. “I mean our confidence in the strength of American democracy. I mean our friendship with the people and with the American democracy. I mean our common struggle so that our democracies emerge stronger from this moment that we are all living in today, ”he continued.
Like the French president, several world leaders condemned the irruption of pro-Trump demonstrators on Capitol Hill, denounced an “attack against democracy ”and called for respect for the result of the American presidential election.
