María León is celebrating that she has been a soloist for almost five years. It’s not that he wasn’t happy before in his role as a vocalist in the pop group Playa Limbo; What happened is that he was not able to get involved in other artistic projects because he had a “shared responsibility” with his band.
“I no longer have to ask permission, “said the singer in an interview she offered from her home in Mexico City through Zoom. “Now I can do theater, then go to TV, make movies, go back to music, change genre.”
Speaking of genres and freedom He is also celebrating that he has just released “Request permission”, a beautiful song that he recorded with Edwin Luna and Trakalosa de Monterrey. It is the first time –and it will not be the only one– that León sings a song that fuses the band, cumbia and pop.
This is the first cut of 12 or 10 that will be part of a disc that still It does not have a release date, but it will include original songs that León and Mexican composer Marcela de la Garza wrote during the pandemic.
The album comes after “Inquebrantable”, an EP with which León showed that he has the wood to interpret rhythms other than pop. From this record production songs were released that were very successful, among them “Locos” and “My name came out.”
“I’m making a record very danceable, with music between bands, grupera, cumbia, regional ”, he explained. “And I feel super happy that I am less and less afraid to experiment with different things, I am less afraid to explore things that I never dared.”
That does not mean that the road has been easy “because it is as if I had to start from scratch,” he said. “[Pero] has brought me a lot of satisfaction and has made me feel very comfortable in my own skin.”
León left Playa Limbo, band of the who was part of it for fifteen years, because besides wanting to sing other genres, he wanted to do musical theater, one of his great passions. A few months ago she was the protagonist of Chicago, which was presented in Mexico.
In the new stage of León, who is originally from Guadalajara, not only the music is present. He has also served as a judge for programs such as Pequeños Gigantes, competed in the program “Who is the mask?” –Which will be seen on Univision in a few weeks– and starred in “Guerra de ídolos”, on Telemundo-Netflix.
To his 34 years, and with all the road traveled, the artist no longer He is afraid of failing.
“It’s part of the day to day,” he said. “I believe that after failure comes the attempt, and these two components lead you to the path of success.”
