AP

Washington Hispanic:

A preparer Virginia tax returns was sentenced to 27 months in prison for filing false returns, said the federal prosecutors.

Between 2014 and 2014, Angela Harper of Newport News prepared tax returns that claimed fraudulent credits and deductions in order to get her clients larger refunds, the East Virginia Attorney’s Office said in a press release Monday. Harper did not sign the returns to give the impression that his clients actually did the work.

Prosecutors also said that Harper did not review the completed returns with his clients and did not give them copies even though they specifically requested them.

In total, prosecutors said Harper filed more than 400 false tax returns that cost the IRS more than $ 700, 000. Prosecutors said Harper operated his tax preparation business out of his home and hotel rooms in the Newport News area.
