Elections in Georgia: the bitter dispute between Democrats and Republicans for control of the Senate

Two very even races.

The state of Georgia in the United States held this Tuesday the elections to elect the two senators from this state and after the count of 92% of the votes, the result is so close that still a winner cannot be declared.

These elections, in which two candidates face Republicans against two Democrats, they are key because they will decide which party gets the majority in the Senate.

CBS, an ally of the BBC , indicates that in both races both candidates have equal chances of winning.

The final result should be known in the next few hours, but if it is still very close, the declaration of the winners could to take several days.

President-elect Joe Biden’s Democrats already have a majority in the House of Representatives, and they need to win both seats to have control of the Senate and, by extension, the Congress.

The Republicans of President Donald Trump , for their part, only need one winner to maintain control of the Senate.

Who are facing?

On the Republican side the candidates are Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue, who seek to keep the seat that they currently have in the Senate representing Georgia.

Republican Loeffler faces Reverend Raphael Warnock. Senator Perdue competes against former journalist Jon Ossoff.

In the elections last November both Republicans won, but neither of them obtained the 50% of the votes with which, according to the law of that state, the winner could be declared, so this second round was necessary.

How’s the count going?

Voting ended at 20 local time (midnight GMT), although all those who were still lining up outside the polling places at the time were allowed to vote.

Poll workers in the 159 Georgia counties are tabulating the day’s votes, along with early votes and by mail.

According to CBS, the total turnout is estimated in just over four million.

More than three million votes, around 40% of state’s registered voters, cast before Tuesday.

In this campaign, Democrats were seeking supporters in major urban areas, particularly in the Atlanta suburbs.

The Republicans, for their part, are concentrated in the North Georgia stronghold, as well as the rural areas and smaller cities.

A Democrat has not won a Senate race in Georgia in 36 years, but the party may be boosted by Biden’s victory in that state in the presidential elections.

Just over two weeks to go before the inauguration of Joe Biden, but the first real test of his presidency was this Tuesday.

If the Democrats win both seats and thus achieve a tie 50 – 50 In the Senate, it will still be far from certain that Biden can enact the environmental, healthcare and economic legislation that he proposed during his successful presidential campaign.

The narrow margin will ensure that any law will have to be supported by centrists in his party, such as Joe Manchin of West Virginia and the two senators from Arizona.

However, it will give the new president a chance to fight for the legislative achievements and will make it much easier for you to appoint your preferred federal judges and administration officials.

If Republicans maintain dominance of the Senate, Democratic hopes will fall to the whims of Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and a handful of moderate Republicans.

Why are elections in Georgia?

The upper house of the United States Congress, the Senate, has been controlled by the Republican Party since 2014.

This instance is key for the approval of laws and the confirmation of the appointments of the cabinet and the judges of the Supreme Court, the highest court of

highest court in the country.

If Democrats win in Georgia, the two additional seats would give them effective control Senate.

Each match would have 50 senators and in case of tie Democratic Vice President, Kamala Harris , would have the deciding vote.
