In 2020, number of bikes on the roads exploded, reaching up to 20% out of the two periods of confinement. Over the whole year 2020, the association of collectivities Vélo & Territoires, estimates in a report that bicycle use has increased by 10% .
Produced in conjunction with the Ministry of Ecological Transition, this first assessment – still provisional – is based on a national sample of 36 representative meters. The increase in the number of visits is over the year of 10% in urban areas, and 2% in rural areas, with a drop of 1% in suburban areas, according to Vélo & Territoires.
More and more bikes in city
Containment periods excluded, “the new impetus given to cycling is beneficial to all circles”, welcomes the association, with + 27% of passages in urban areas, + 14% in peri-urban areas and more 20% in rural areas. “The year 310 will have been year of the great boom in cycling in France ”, she notes, explaining that“ two factors particularly encouraged the French to use the bicycle: transport strikes and the health crisis ”
