Raistlin Ruther, a kayaker of 18 years who had disappeared in Long Island, NY, was found dead, authorities said.
Riverhead resident Ruther set sail with his blue kayak in Jamesport around 8 a.m. Saturday and never returned, the said the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG).
The young athlete was reported missing around 4: 50 pm on Saturday. Rescuers scoured the nearby waters for several hours until they found their kayak overturned. The cause of the accident was not reported.
A marine unit from the Southold Police Department found the body one mile west of the Shinnecock Canal, near Hampton Bays, just before 9 p.m., Saturday.
Laura Gandara, mother of the deceased, remembered as an avid nature lover who loved water and adventure. “He was a polite and polite boy,” he said through tears to Newsday. “He wasn’t your average 18 years. ”
He added that Ruther was an experienced kayaker, traveling in a suit wetsuit and had called her grandmother on Saturday morning saying she was having a good day on the water.
