Mourning in boxing: Colombian boxer Miguel Quiñones died after fighting for several days in a coma

Colombian boxer Luis Quiñones died early this Friday after spending five days in a coma as a result of injuries sustained last Saturday during a fight in the city of Barranquilla against his compatriot José Muñoz.

Quiñones was in an induced coma after undergoing surgery for a clot in the brain after collapsing during the fight , held at the Elías Chewgin Coliseum in this Caribbean city, where he was fighting for the national junior welterweight title.

Leonardo Quiñones, the boxer’s brother, confirmed the death in a message on social networks.

“You were ahead of us my soul brother, now you are in your father’s lap heavenly, whom you adored and served, I love you my brother, forever and ever in our hearts”, published Quiñones’ relative on Facebook.

Even the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, lamented the death of the d eportista.

“It hurts a lot to see a young man full of dreams leave and with a whole future ahead of him. To the family of the Santander boxer Luis Quiñones: a hug from the heart, I am very sorry for this difficult moment”, the president said on Twitter.

The Colombian Boxing Federation (Fedecolbox) expressed, for its part, its condolences to the family of Quiñones, who “unfortunately passed away at midnight on Thursday, after having been declared brain dead”.

“’Pantallita’ lost his toughest fight, we pray to God for his soul. The sport is in mourning”, expressed the Federation in its social networks.

The most recent report from the General Clinic of the North, a care center where Quiñones was confined, indicated that the boxer “suffered neurological, functional and metabolic deterioration, which accompanied several ischemias in the left cerebral hemisphere.”

A native of Barrancabermeja, a town located in the center of the country on the banks of the Magdalena River, the boxer arrived at Saturday’s fight as a favorite since he was undefeated in his career , since he won the 10 fights he fought as a professional, six of them by way of knockout.

After after the fight and that Quiñones entered the assistance center, his rival José Muñoz had published a letter in which he expressed his concern about the critical condition of his friend.
